Wilde Roast gets its name from Oscar Wilde, the 19th century playwright. The owners have tried to create an ambiance that would be to Wilde's taste, and ended up with a supremely comfortable and pleasing atmosphere. There are leather chairs, couches, as well as tables, along with a piano and local art. The light fixtures and decor are all very nice and at night it can be quite romantic. They have a fabulous menu and locals love to stop in at Wilde Roast for lunch. The coffee is also superb, as well as desserts and a nice wine selection.
This is a good place to dine or hang out and read/study. The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable, and they stock local papers as well as the New York Times for patrons.
Free wireless is a draw for the college crowd while many types of entertainment often snag others to stop by. Their website is always up-to-date and provides the latest schedules of entertainment.

Matchbox is tiny, there is one table and a lunch counter, so this is not a coffee shop at which to sit and study. The staff are very friendly as is the neighborhood. The shop is owned by a cooperative in the neighborhood, and thus has a fund raiser each year. Locals are fiercely loyal, and the coffee and food are good.

Erte, and it's bar next door, the Peacock Lounge are great. Erte is known for its steaks and seafood, but has good pasta dishes and desserts as well. It's a good place to go for a special occasion, or when you just want a nice dinner. The restaurant area is a big open room with original tin ceilings and wooden floors, with Victorian-style chairs. During the holidays, they have several Christmas trees on display. The lack of carpet or fabric means it can get noisy. The restaurant fills up quickly on the weekend, so call ahead for reservations. They frequently have a jazz combo playing at night.

Shaw's is truly a local bar. They're known for their burgers, which are made fresh to order and are quite tasty. There is usually an older, local crowd of men and women, and Shaw's frequently has live music.

Psycho Suzie's, like Jax and the Sample Room, is a quirky NE staple. They're known primarily for their pizza, which combines gourmet ingredients (e.g. white wine sauce and pine nuts), with an affordable price. Their appetizers are particularly satisfying when out drinking with friends. They are known for the quirky decor inside and the fabulous outdoor patio complete with tiki torches. It's always busy and universally loved.

Urban Harvest is a great coffee shop. They brew Alakef Coffee, which is located in Duluth, MN, and Alakaf can be hard to find in Minneapolis. They're coffee is very good, and they do sell beans also. They also have great sandwiches and soups, served lunchroom style for a good price and you can also buy loaves of bread and other baked goods. The shop is usually crowded on weekends, particularly Sundays, and can get noisy. It's not a good place for long study sessions as table space is at a premium. It's connected to a flower shop which often makes it smell very nice.

Jersey Mike's is in a newer strip mall in St. Anthony, near St. Anthony Wines and Spirits. They're subs are more expensive than Subway, Jimmy John's, and other comparable sub shops, but they are good. Seemingly a local establishment, they are a chain.

Jax is the perfect place for a special occasion dinner. Primarily known for steaks, their seafood and other entrees are also very good. It is on the pricey side, but well worth the cost. It's a NE Minneapolis institution, and frequented by politicians and the upper class in Minneapolis. They have a lovely outdoor area with a waterfall that kids love, and the ambiance inside is calm and romantic. Reservations are recommended, and Sunday brunch is a particular favorite of those in the community.

This is the go-to Chinese restaurant for my family. They deliver, which is fabulous, and I've never been disappointed with the cuisine. Though it is located in Columbia Heights, they'll usually deliver to the northern end of NE Mpls. They've been in business for quite a long time, the staff are friendly and helpful. The prices are very reasonable, and portion sizes are large. They have both Cantonese chow mien and the Americanized version, and their egg roles are fabulous. They close early, 9pm and are not open on Sundays.

Marina actually has two locations, this is the more casual of the two. This location is a lot like Marina's primary competitor, Holy Land, and has a counter where you order and pick up with casual seating and refrigerator cases of drinks lining the back. They also have a buffet. Open fairly late, usually 10-11pm, and always busy, Marina can be counted on to provide good food at a great price. Mostly everything is made to order and delicious.
